I have one old server Ubuntu Linux 10.04.3 and all services with mysql DB will have to migrate to Ubuntu Linux 14.04.1. What will be the standard procedure?

I’m new on kubuntu and i did the first step. But i do not know ~/*, ~/.* and
I tried to copy with Grsync as super uers and copied /home/ to /media/def/My passport/Backup then when I did same step with super user on the new laptop and copied /media/def/My passport/Backup to /home/ nothing copied. then i tried to do the 3rd step and it taked much time then when i check it by search for VLC player i found that i is not installed while it asked me to enter the root password when i was setup the apatchi 2 server.
Anyone can tell how to copy whole data stored in my old computer with background and effects too to my new computer? I like it in steps.

I don’t know much about encrypted userfolders. I would love to hear about your findings.

This will be very useful to me. Thanks.

Thanks to your guide, even though I have stubby fingers and no magic linux powers, I have been able to take repeated copies of my desktop computer to my laptop. I have done this for several years now, letting me take a clone of my desktop with me on location, it’s really changed my life for the better. Recently I am using “apt-get” to complete step 3 with later versions to replace “aptitude” but even I can do that.

Thanks for your help.
